There are two different QuickTalk for Windows Mobile installation types.

ActiveSync: The Microsoft^® ActiveSync installation is especially useful for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices because it includes all the necessary prerequisites for QuickTalk, which are not preloaded with Windows Mobile 5, including the .Net Compact Framework version 2.0 and SQL Server Compact Edition version 3.1. All the required files are saved in ActiveSync on your desktop PC so you can easily connect one device after another and, using ActiveSync's "Add/Remove Programs" menu, select the appropriate check boxes to install these prerequesites on each device along with QuickTalk.
Note: This installation type requires Microsoft ActiveSync 4.x or later, which can be downloaded here.

CAB: The .cab installation does not include the .Net Compact Framework 2.0 or SQL Server CE. Since Windows Mobile 6.x devices come with these two products pre-installed in ROM, the easiest way to install QuickTalk on a WM 6 device would be to just copy the .CAB file to the device and then, from the device itself, tap on the .CAB file to install it. If you choose to do the .CAB install on Windows Mobile 5.x devices, however, you will need to manually install the .Net Compact Framework 2.0 and SQL Server CE 3.1 first. Both of these products can be downloaded from Microsoft.

Note: During installation on the mobile device, when asked where to install the product you must choose the default location of "Device".

QuickTalk Client for Windows extends the QuickTalk VoIP system to the desktop PC platform, making it an ideal solution for office employees who (a) would like a quick and easy way to communicate with warehouse workers running QuickTalk for Windows Mobile,
or (b) would like an easy way to talk to other office employees over their own PCs. All that's required is a Windows PC^*, speakers and a noise cancelling microphone (or a PC headset), and a login id into their company's QuickTalk Server (see the QuickTalk Server download for more info).

The QuickTalk for Windows user interface is similar to the mobile version's interface in that there are four tabs: My Contacts, My Site, Other Sites, and Log. But unlike the mobile version, there's no need to hold down the Talk button while talking. Just click the Talk button once to initiate a conversation, and click the Bye button when you're ready to hang up.

Tip #1: Don't put your mouth too close to the mic. If the other person in the conversation says that you sound like Charlie Brown's teacher (wa wa... wa wa wa), then move the mic further away from your mouth until you sound normal on the other end of the line. This may or may not be necessary, depending on the quality of the headset or microphone being used.

Tip #2: Use a noise cancelling microphone or PC headset. You can get one for around $20 to $30, but stay away from the $10 microphones that don't provide noise cancellation or you will probably hear an echo when using QuickTalk. Any headset that says it supports "voice recognition" would be a good choice since that usually indicates a better quality headset. And as for desktop microphones, we really like this one.

QuickTalk Server ships with a fully functional 30 day license key for up to 50 users.

If you're trying QuickTalk for Windows Mobile out for the first time, our recommendation is to first just install the client on a couple devices to quickly experience the voice communication via "Serverless demo" mode (available under the QuickTalk Settings menu on each mobile device). Then install QuickTalk Server and login to it from the mobile devices (and optionally some Windows PCs too) to experience QuickTalk in a more production-like environment.

There are two QuickTalk Server installation types. One includes a free copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, which is useful for evaluation purposes and can almost always be used as your long term solution as well. The second installation type does not include SQL Server Express. Only use this one if you already have SQL Server 2005 (any edition) installed.

A copy of the QuickTalk Administrator client will automatically be installed as part of the QuickTalk Server installation. To also install QuickTalk Administrator on another PC (for remote administration purposes), or to see the default administrator id and password, please see the QuickTalk Administrator Client download tab.

System Requirements:

• Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, or Server 2008
• Internet Information Services (IIS) - Note: If you're running Windows XP with SP2 or later and you have trouble installing IIS because it continuously prompts you for files during the installation process that you don't have, download this zip file and extract it to any empty directory. Then point the IIS installation to that directory to obtain the necessary files.
• Enabled ASP.NET 2.0 web service extensions - After installing QuickTalk Server, follow these instructions to make sure ASP.NET 2.0 web service extensions are enabled in IIS.
• SQL Server 2005 or later (only necessary if using the "without SQL Server Express" install)

Over 60 QuickTalk for Windows Mobile client settings can be configured centrally using a single configuration file. Just edit the file to fit your specific needs, then send it to the "\Program Files\Radicomm\QuickTalk" directory of the Windows Mobile (or Windows CE) devices that you want to automatically configure. The next time those QuickTalk clients restart (which you can force to occur by copying an empty file called "QtRestart.flg" to the same directory), your settings changes will be applied. Here are just a few of the many settings that can be configured remotely in this way.

• QuickTalk Server's IP Address
• Hot-key to Show/Hide QuickTalk Window
• Hardware Push-to-talk Button
• Default Microphone and Speaker Volume
• Menu Lockdown Mode (including an Admin Override password)
• Single Sign-on (i.e. login integration with another system such as a WMS)

The QuickTalk Administrator client can be installed on any PC running Windows 2000 or later. It enables the remote administration of QuickTalk Server, including the creation, removal, and modification of QuickTalk sites, users, and roles, as well as license key management and permission management (i.e. who is allowed to talk to whom, etc).
